SUNKENLAND: NEW SURVIVAL GAME UPCOMING!
NEW SURVIVAL GAME HAS SERIOUS WATERWORLD VIBES!
April 13. 2023.
The newest addition to the world of survival games is reminiscent of the 90s post-apocalyptic action film starring Kevin Costner.

Sunkenland is a survival game which may remind players of Waterworld. If there are gamers who enjoyed the premise of the 1995 action film, Sunkenland might become their next favorite game to play on their PC. Waterworld was released in 1995. It's a post-apocalyptic action film directed by Kevin Reynolds and starring Kevin Costner and Dennis Hopper. Costner was also credited in the movie as a producer. The film showed the world after the polar ice cap melted; consequently, most of the world became covered by water. The film's hero was played by Kevin Costner, and was unnamed, except for "The Mariner" moniker. It was the most expensive film made at the time with a budget of $175 million. However, it opened to mixed reviews and barely managed to break even after VHS sales. It spawned a novelization, a video game, and a themed attraction. While the film itself is infamous, its premise sparks interest. Waterworld: A Live Sea War Spectacular is still a running attraction at Universal Studios, a Waterworld TV series is in the works, and now Sunkenland gives a nod to the setting.

Official Trailer:

Sunkenland doesn't hide its inspiration. On its Steam page the developer, Vector3 Studio, introduces the setting as a "Waterworld-themed survival game." The idea of survival games is not new at this point, with plenty of entries in the genre and underwater themes have been explored as well. Among others, Subnautica allowed players to explore an alien ocean while Raft sees gamers drifting across the sea with little resources. Sunkenland very much relies on the film's premise it's inspired by. The inhabitants of this world need to explore a vast water world with subway tunnels, skyscrapers, and nuclear power plants. Through discovery, the player will be able to utilize lost technologies and gather rare items from before the cataclysm.

Base building is another familiar element gamers will be able to engage in, which will be essential in protecting their home from pirates. The trailer which Vector3 Studio released does a good job of showing most of the elements players can expect once they play the game. Sunkenland is currently marked as an Early Access game on Steam but is not available for purchase just yet. If players want to feel like they are trying to survive in an ocean-covered world, fighting for resources and fending off mutants, Sunkenland will likely be up their street. Hopefully, the developers will soon make it available to download, so gamers can start their journey.
